Beijing--Jun 10--China's Ministry of Health issued an urgent notice
Wednesday banning imports of livestock and dairy products from Belgium,
the Netherlands, France and Germany, where the products have been found
to be contaminated with dioxin, the Economic Daily reported today.

The notice was quoted as saying imports of dairy and livestock
products, including both raw materials and semi-finished products,
produced by the 4 European countries since Jan 15, 1999 would be
temporarily suspended.
Sale of dairy and livestock products already imported from the banned
countries produced since that date should be immediately halted, the
notice said.
The Ministry of Health will make further announcements after studying
the issue, it said.
China has already imported some livestock and dairy products, except
beef, from the banned countries, the statement said without providing
further details.
Dioxin is a known cancer-causing chemical and the Ministry of Health
issued the notice in accordance with China's Food Health Law.
